Quitting smoking and Acupuncture
Extensive research has shown that smoking is harmful to the health. Long term exposure to the nicotine contained in tobacco increases the incident of bronchitis, coronary heart disease emphysema, hypertension, fetal malformation, cancer in the lungs, mouth, lips and pancreas. In addition, second-hand smoking pollutes the air breathed by non-smokers in the same place, resulting in harm as well as to the smokers themselves.
Smoking is physically addictive as well as psychologically habit forming. Long term smokers often experience withdrawal syndrome including restlessness, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, feeling of emptiness and weight gain when they suddenly stop smoking.
Acupuncture has shown that it is effective in relieving these symptoms. A theoretical basis for this clinical finding has been provided by recent studies showing that electroacupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins and ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), which functions to relieve pain and tranquilize the mind.
Acupuncture is effective for treating smoking withdrawal. Many people will experience subjective changes in the taste of tobacco smoke, which will be seen to become bitter or astringent, with resulting aversion to smoking. There will generally be great improvement in withdrawal symptoms after five to six treatments. Auricular therapy is used especially often due to its special characteristics of effectiveness, simplicity, and painlessness.
