Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine. It is based on treating a variety of conditions by triggering specific points on the skin with needles. Acupuncture is a minimally invasive method to stimulate nerve-rich areas of the skin surface in order to influence tissues, glands, organs, and various functions of the body. Each acupuncture needle produces a tiny sensation at the insertion point. It causes little discomfort but reduce the episode of heartburn.
There are following acupuncture points that are treated for relief from hyper-acidity:
- A few points on below and above the belly button
- The region where the big and second toe meets
- On the center of sternum bone
- Just below the hairline
- Below knee joints
- On the inner side of the wrists
- On the ears
Many people who are suffering from these concerns are likely to make a natural choice for hyper-acidity, re-flux and GERD, considering its countless benefits.
Hyper-acidity and Ayurveda
Ayurveda describes as Hyper-acidity or Amla Pitta. It occurs due to high level of pitta in the small intestine. This is usually associated by a sour taste in the mouth or throat, belching and heartburn. This issue is mostly caused by an improper diet such as spicy food, sour food, greasy food, overeating and alcohol. In some cases, it is also caused by a too much sugary food and drinks.
The main cause for hyper-acidity is that food remains undigested and just stays in the stomach. The undigested food in the stomach keeps fermenting and causing a discomfort to the person. While this issue is more common in Vata and Pitta bodies, but it can happen to any type of body with weak digestion. Ayurvedic herbs and treatment treat the issue from the root, eventually addressing on holistic level.
The Ayurvedic concept of health is defined by the balance in the doshas or principal energies in the body. Out of the three doshas, it is the pitta dosha that regulates body metabolism. Imbalance in pitta can cause acidity. In Ayurveda, this is referred to as Amla Pitta. Ayurveda believes that pitta imbalance happens due to stress, improper diet, not taking food on time, sleep deficit, lack of exercise, and overindulgence in fatty and oily foods.
Ayurveda also states that improper food combinations can lead to acidity or hyper-acidity and can lead to digestive problems. A key aspect of Ayurveda is the importance of Agni (digestive fire). It is said that Agni ensures proper digestion. When the Agni weakens, it leads to excess acid production.
The weakening of Agni may also result in the production of toxins known as Ama. It is said that Ama causes an imbalance in Pitta dosha leading to hyper-acidity. Vata Dosha imbalance also has a role to play in digestive problems. Excess of vata or air causes bloating and gas along with acidity. Here again, an improper diet contributes to the dosha imbalance.
Ayurveda takes holistic approach to tackle this issue. These include:
- Balance vitiated dosha and restore the proper function of Digestive fire (Agni)
- Use diet that pacifies vitiated dosha.
- The diet should avoid excess oily, spicy, and fatty foods.
- Freshly prepared food should be eaten when it is hot or warm.
- Intake of Coffee, tea, alcohol reduced or avoided
- Physical activities, yoga and pranayama exercise can be included in daily routine for proper digestion and managing hyper-acidity.
- Sound sleep is important for body to recover and rejuvenate
- Consumption of food on time is important with sufficient water intake.
