Ayurveda and Eczema in children

My daughter is four years old and her eczema is making her life miserable. I am constantly using cortisone cream for her which provides a short term relief.  She is not sleeping well and scratches so much that blood will come out from affected region. Can Ayurveda prevent this from happening, and how?

Yes, Ayurveda can prevent eczema. Eczema is a skin disease, which is observed as exfoliation of the skin, mostly accompanied by severe itching. In the chronic stage, there may be oozing of pus and bleeding from the affected regions. It is also commonly referred to as dermatitis.

In Ayurveda, eczema is known as “Vicharchika”. It is caused by the vitiation of all three doshas – vata pitta and kapha. The pitta vitiated “Vicharchika” is the most common. Vitiation of skin occurs through imbalance between the pitta and the blood to produce eczema.

Treatment in Ayurveda

Eczema can be treated by Ayurvedic products and herbs which help to purify blood and pitta dosha pacification. Some herbs like manjistha, sariva, chandan and satavari purify the blood and provide relief to the skin. A child can be given a bath with a decoction of neem, haridra and patola mixed in warm water.  This will assist in preventing eczema. If you are considering using Ayurvedic methods, please consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Basic care for eczema:

If the eczema is due to an ingredient in the diet, then abstain from that particular food.

Soaps and detergents must not be used on inflamed skin. Special non fragrant herbal soaps can be used.
